Title: Cancer Connection: Risks and burdens to the LGBT Community

Presenter: Thomas Pier, LCSW, Simms Mann Center, UCLA. 
A growing body of evidence suggests that LGBT people have a substantially increased risk of developing cancer than the general population. This, coupled with decreased cancer screening rates and less access to care, results in cancers being detected at a later stage when they are more difficult to treat and have poorer prognoses.

Title: Therapeutic Scrapbooking: A Technique to Promote Positive coping and emotional Strength in Parents of Pediatric Oncology Patients

Presenter: Paula G. McCarthy, MSW, ACSW, LCSW, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Therapeutic scrapbooking is an intervention being used with parents and caregivers of children with cancer. Facilitators, licensed in medical social work, provide a safe environment for participants to verbalize their stories and share their distress. Scrapbooking is a “normal” activity without the negative stigma that s “support group” may carry. Outcome measurements indicate this therapeutic intervention achieves positive results.

Diane will be sharing program developed and implemented within the lacks Cancer Center: discussion will also include participant feedback and date collected.
